The effects of flow topology on dissipation and reaction rates

Objective

Research objectives and content
We intend to analyse the effects of flow topology on diffusion processes by performing two sets of numerical simulations.
The first.set concerns the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. We will investigate the space filling properties of the interface between two adjacent streams. The rolling-up of this interface leads to a structure with spiral topology and increases the area of mixed fluids, so that diffusion rates, dissipation rates, reaction rate and combustion rates are very sensitive to this dynamical process.
The second set is about a turbulent flow dominated by a single eddy, where interactions between the eddy and the turbulent surrounding flow generates high vorticity zones with well-defined geometry. We will investigate the effect of these structures on dissipation, diffusion and reactive processes.
The results of these analyses will be applied to the study and modelling of dissipation and diffusion processes in turbulent reactive flows, shear layers and vertical flows. Both problems will also be used to understand the properties of vortex sheets and vortex filaments in the small scales of turbulent flows.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Our proposal is a collaboration between a theoretical Fluid Dynamics laboratory (DAMTP), and an applied research center involved in Numerical Fluid Dynamics (CERFACS). This exchange will be fruitful for both laboratories.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
