A comprehensive study of the x-ray spectra of weakly magnetic accreting neutron stars

Objective

Binary systems that contain a compact object (a weakly magnetic neutron star or black hole) and a low-mass companion star are unique because they are the best place to study weakly magnetic neutron stars and form the fiducial point to compare them to black holes. These systems are very complex and the interplay between observations and theory plays a key role in understanding their characteristics. Here, I propose to perform a comprehensive study of the X-ray spectra of weakly magnetic neutron stars, improve the theoretical models, and compare them directly to observations. This project will greatly improve our understanding of the basic physical processes involved and will also provide us with information on the fundamental properties of neutron stars, their magnetic fields and spin frequencies. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Working at the University of Amsterdam, I will be trained in analyzing spectral and fast-timing data from various X-ray satellites and in fitting theoretical models to them. I will also benefit in collaborating with local experts on hydrodynamic problems and the physics of accretion disks. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The physical understanding and the advanced computation techniques developed for photon-transport in multiple dimensions will be usefull in neutron transport problems and their many industrial applications.
