Objective Research objectives and content We shall advance the theory of the granular media, utilizing both computer simulations and analytical methods, with special emphasis on the following topics: 1. Static force propagation equations New approaches for solving the continuum mechanics of a granular assembly, particularly the long-standing closure problem, shall be further investigated and critically tested. 2. Molecular dynamics simulations of granulates We apply molecular dynamics (MD) simulations (in combination with an experimental collaboration) for studying the dynamics of the size- and stripe-segregation processes. 3. Methodology of computational physics of granular media We shall develop a new computational method by combining the best features of MD and cellular automaton simulations. The succesful method allows realistic simulation of systems which are beyond the reach of the present methods. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Applied Research Training Grant shall be used in my training in the field of the granular media, thus significantly broadening the scope of the problems I am equipped to tackle as a maturing physicist. The suggested research projects are realistic, important for the basic understanding of the mechanics of granular media, and enable solution of many problems which have escaped the efforts previously. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The research group at Ustutt has active industrial collaboration with Statoil (Norway), X-RS (Paris), and common projects with German chemical industry.
