Implicit particle methods for the solution of the vlasov-maxwell equations - an altenative to the vlasov-darwin model

Objective

Give below a brief summary of the objectives and content of the project. Also describe briefly the training content of the proposal, as well as its links with industry or industrial relevance, if any. This whole summary should be a maximum of 200 words of plain typed text, avoiding formulae and other special characters, preferably in English.
Plasma physics involve multiple time and multiple length scale physics. If the precise description of high frequency physics is not necessary, the Vlasov-Maxwell system can be solved using an implicit method as an alternative to the Vlasov-Darwin model. The underlying approximation, however, remains unclarified from a mathematical viewpoint. The aim of this research project is the extensive study of the direct implicit method understanding it as an approximate Newton method. The research project consists of three parts: First a detailed mathematical analysis will improve the convergence properties of the method and lead to more robustness of the code at the CNRS-CMAP. The case of relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell equations and the enforcing of Gauss' law by different means will also be considered, extending the applicability of the code. Second, algebraic methods for the discretized equations such as preconditioning amd parallelisation techniques will improve its efficiency. The third part - in cooperation with phycisists - are applications to advanced plasma physics problems such as the interaction of ultraintensive laser pulses with plasmas which are expected to give new insight into physical phenomena. This research project gives the opportunity to extend former work to and acquire new knowledge within a different mathematical and physical situation.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
