Towards quantitative brain studies with the positron camera posicam hlz-r - camera performance characterization and partial volume effect correction

Objective

Research objectives and content
The framework of the proposed project is the development of tools leading to improve quantitation on images obtained by positron emission tomography (PET) by an interdisciplinary cooperation between the Grupo de Bioingenieria y Telemedicina (Universidad Politecnica de Madrid) and the Centro PET Complutense. Particularly we will work on the implementation of a reconstruction image method that improves partial volume effect correction, allowing better quantitation of tracer distribution in human brain studies, which present special importance in neurological and oncologic studies. Since this PET camera (the first in Spain) has been recently installed, we must start this work with a fully characterization of its imaging capabilities.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The main result of this work will be an image reconstruction algorithm with improved partial volume effect correction which will have in consideration non-ideal real situations. Since PET imaging plays a fundamental role in areas of nuclear medicine such as neurology, cardiology, oncology and brain research (e.g. activation during cognitive processes), this areas will benefit directly from the improvements in quantitative analysis of PET images. Moreover quantitation in nuclear medical imaging contribute to more accurate assessment in diagnosis and treatment.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
This project is highly linked with the Centro PET Complutense, a private research institute. In addition, the Grupo de Bioingenierfa y Telemedicina (UPM) has a strong collaboration with ITISA Biomedicina, a Spanish company active in nuclear medicine equipment production and marketing, that could be interested in the results of this project.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
