Global geodynamic models of mantle convection

Objective

Research objectives and content
Global geodynamic mantle models allow us to exploit the constraints derived from global data sets. Results from seismic tomography, the geoid, and geo- chemical probing are explained dynamically by mantle convection. Therefore their interpretation must combine rigorous fluid dynamic modeling with observations of the geological record. An important constraint on mantle convection for the Mesozoic and Cenozoic is provided by the history of past plate motion. I propose to investigate the temporal evolution of mantle flow since the Mesozoic using a 3-D spherical geodynamic mantle convection model that includes the record of past plate motion (150 My). The proposed research will improve our understanding of the dynamic evolution of mantle density anomalies and mantle mixing. I propose to conduct this research at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
