Design and synthesis of phthalocyanine-based molecular semiconductor - supramolecular architecture and gas-sensing activity

Objective

Research objectives and content
The present proposal is aimed at the preparation and the development of intrinsic molecuiar semiconductors particularly suited for selective gas sensing devices. Previous investigations suggest amphiphilic liquid crystalline Phthlocyanine (Pc's) as especially promising materials to this end.
Non-symmetric Pc's and related triazole-Pc's, containing polar head groups (e.g. carboxylic acid-. triazole groups) as well as long chain alkyl/alkoxy substituents, processable and suited for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film deposition will be synthesised by recently established methodology.
The compounds prepared will be fabricated into ultrathin LB- and self-assembly films and the supramolecular architecture (type of packing. long range order, degree of orientation) within these films will be investigated. Subsequently. the semiconducting and gas sensing properties will be assessed and correlated with the electronic structures of the constituting metallomacrocycles and the respective film morphology. It is the ulthnate goal of the proposed research to provide better solutions for the reliable and continuous monitoring of enviromentally hazardous gases. such as NO2 or 03.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The present proposal will allow the candidate to develop further his abilities in synthetic organic chemistry and in the operation of modern chromatographic and spectroscopic instruments. It will give him a greater insight into thin film and molecular gas sensors design, formation and characterisation, and more generally, into the molecular materials domain. Furthermore, the candidate expects, at the end of his stay in Spain, to be able to communicate fluently in both written and spoken Spanish as well as to assimilate another European culture and academic system. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The present application is endorsed by the enterprise CASA (Spain), one of the most important European companies in the fabrication of aircraft.
