Objective
Research objectives and content
The topic of the project I am going to carry out under the supervision of Dr. N. Peake is the study of the 'absolute instability' on swept wings in a compressible supersonic flow, enabling the understanding of a new potential mechanism for transition to turbulence in boundary layers . I also propose to work on the
associated 'receptivity' issue of how disturbances get into boundary layer using asymptotic 'triple deck' analysis in the limit of large Reynolds numbers. In particular I will look at the 'distributed receptivity' for a supersonic boundary layer in which the surface roughness is supposed spatially periodic. Although the research proposed here is mainly theoretical it is to be emphasised that the project will also involve some experimental work .
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The main aim of the research is the development of a new efficient mechanism of transition to turbulence in supersonic boundary layers in order to get an accurate prediction and a considerable reduction of the drag for a new generation of subsonic and supersonic aircraft . Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
During the 3 years of Ph.D. study it will be possible to collaborate closely with engineers at the British Aerospace Airbus Ltd. in Bristol with whom N. Peake has a strong close collaboration. This research could make a significant contribution to Europe efforts in the development of a second generation of civil transport aircraft
