Solid Oxide Fuel Cells are considered to be the most promising power generation systems with respect to high efficiency, low pollution and high fuel flexibility. For their technological application it is crucial to reduce the fabrication cost, which is directly related to the lowering of the operating temperature (600-800rC). This requires the development of new materials for the electrolyte (Ce(Gd)O3 or thin YSZ films) and the cathode electrode (LaCoO3). Our aim is the development of YSZ/CGO electrolyte films, which can be processed and operate without the formation of microstructure defects. The incorporation of a thin Ce(Gd)O3 film between the YSZ and the cathode, proposed in this concept, is added to protect YSZ against interaction with the cathode (LaCoO3), in order to avoid performance degradation.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Optimisation of the co-firing process of YSZ and CGO as epitaxial thin layers will give me the advantage of being able to apply to the techniques of microstructural characterisation, quantitative microanalyses and diffusion modelling.

The success of this work will contribute directly to the commercial attractiveness of low temperature SOFCs, which is receiving significant industrial interest. The host institute cooperates directly with KWU/Siemens and Daimler-Benz in the SOFC development field.
