Model based iterative reconstruction algorithms for optical tomography

Objective



Research objectives and content Optical Tomography (OT) is a novel emerging imaging modality in medicine. It is employed to reconstruct the interior of biological tissues and organs from various measurements of transmitted near- infrared light intensities. The source is typically a laser whose light is delivered through optical fibers to several location on the surface of the body part under investigation, for example, a female breast or an infant head. The technology for making near-infrared, light-transmission measurement on human subjects is nowadays readily available. However, a major challenge remains the development of computer algorithms that transform these measurements into useful images of the interior of large organs. Unlike x-rays, near-infrared photons do not cross the medium on a straight line from the source to the detector. Light is strongly scattered in biological tissue. Hence conventional back-projection algorithms or other standard reconstruction methods can not be used in OT. The goal of the proposed work is to develop a clinically applicable algorithms for tomographic image reconstruction based on optical transmission measurements. To provide maximum accuracy, efficiency, and speed, I plan to design and test model-based iterative reconstruction codes, which utilize the equation of radiative transfer, employ Bayesian analysis methods, and use adjoint differentiation techniques. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) Training will be provided by Dr. Arridge and his faculty colleagues in mathematical and computational methods concerning image reconstruction in Medical Imaging, especially Optical Tomography. Close collaboration with the engineering team around Dr. Delpy and medical staff headed by Dr. Wyatt at the UCL Hospital will provide me with additional insights in technical and medical problems related to Optical Tomography. In general, I will broaden my current expertise in numerical modelling of light transport in biological media to the wider field of medical imaging. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) The UCL Optical Tomography group has strong ties with Carl Zeiss, Siemens, Phillips, and Hamamatsu. These companies support, licence and market many research products developed at UCL. The project creates possibilities for these and other European biomedical engineering companies to implement new model based iterative image reconstruction algorithms for Optical Tomography and other complex imaging modalities.
