Field theory and dynamics of solitons in particle physics, condensed matter physics and in the early universe

Objective

Research objectives and content
In this project I propose to study the applications of solitons to particle physics (Skyrmions, monopoles, the dual Standard Model), to condensed matter physics (gauged abelian flux vortices in superconductors, vortices in dissipative systems, and to the early universe (cosmic strings, domain walls, textures, solitonic membranes). I will focus particularly on their dynamics and observable consequences.
My proposed project has a strong connection to projects planned for or already running on the COSMOS supercomputer. The numerical simulations done there will require lots of qualitative and quantitative analytical model-building for comparison with the simulations. I also expect to take part in several of the computationally intensive projects on the supercomputer.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The proposed project at DAMTP presents an excellent opportunity for me to employ my previous experience with the field theory and dynamics of solitons in joint interdisciplinary efforts with renouned experts and forerunners of the field. I expect this project to have a higher training impact than any other previous project in my life.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Scientific projects on the COSMOS supercomputer serve as testing grounds for the computer industry in the development of the next generation of powerful computers.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
