Objective
Research objectives and content
Aerosol processes for the generation of nano-structures powders and films have the potential to provide numerous new industrial applications. Such materials show improved or even new properties compared to the ones of micro- or macro-structured materials. The scientific and technology issue of nano-structured materials are on the verge of becoming a wide research and development field of high actuality and relevance to the technical sciences and beyond. Far-reaching applications can be anticipated in life sciences, materials science, in high-tech engineering, and in clean and durable industrial production processes. One route which is of great interest is spray pyrolysis.
In collaboration with industry the following objectives have been defined: (i) to show that spray pyrolysis is capable of producing powders over a wide range of chemical composition, particle size and density; (ii) to establish the fundamental mechanisms of particle formation; (iii) to develop a theoretical model for spray pyrolysis and (iv) to develop criteria for predicting the surface area and grain size of particles when the reactor temperature and residence time are varied. Commercial organisations identified the following types of powder as being of interest to them: (i) ceramic, (ii) metal ruthenate, and (iii) Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The main training objective is to gain a deeper insight into the physical-chemical nature of the complex processes in aerosol production of nanophase materials. By its nature this research is interdisciplinary and I will gain valuable training not only in aerosol science but also aspects of material science. Essex is one of two institutions in the UK undertaking such research. There is an extremely active aerosol community in the UK and I would benefit greatly from their expertise. Aerosol production routes for nanostructured particles is an emerging research area. The work at Essex will allow me to acquire fresh knowledge in this field and a wider competence in the many facets of aerosol science. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Links have been established with powder manufacturers and the electronics industry to determine the potential relevance of the processing routes and the product types to be studied.
