STUDY OF MULTINUCLEAR COPPER AND ZINC COMPLEXES RELEVANT TO BIOLOGICAL ELECTRON TRANSFER PROCESSES AND SUBSTRATE BINDING

Objective

Research objectives and content
we plan to design novel oligopyridine ligands for the self assembly of (supra-)molecular structures as models for oligometal enzymes. Rigid, linear polytopic ligands containing bidentate chelating sites will be used to self-assemble into square matrix arrays of metal centers with ions of tetrahedral coordination geometry, Zn(II) and Cu(I). By varying the number of coordination sites on the ligands, different sizes and shapes of metal arrays are envisioned. Additional ligands could be introduced by tuning solvation and anion interactions. This new approach to model the active sites of polynuclear metallo enzymes has the potential to yield large electron reservoirs to serve as relays in multi-electronic reduction processes (Cu) and provide complexes with the enhanced reactivity and selectivity of multi- metal hydrolytic enzymes (Zn).
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Through this project, the applicant will learn new synthetic methods of the preparation of self-assembly systems, as well as state-of-the-art spectroscopic techniques needed for sophisticated polyelectronic systems. This work is anticipated to result in biomimetic transformations which are of high interest in the fields of pharmacological and environmental chemistry.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Complexes might be used to investigate oxygenation reactions which are relevant to the development of practical catalysts for the mild, selective oxidation of organics. This project will be carried out on a non-financial basis, with potential interest of Rhtne-Poulenc.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
