All-optical processing by three wave-mixing in lithium niobate optical wave guides

Objective

Research objectives and content
The research addresses the field of second-order nonlinear optics and its implications for ultrafast all-optical processing of signals. By 'cascading' three-wave interactions in quadratic media, an intensity controlled phase-shift (to be exploited for switching and routing of optical signals) can be achieved, via frequency up-conversion and successive down-conversion processes.
Most results to date have involved second harmonic generation, but cascading can also be achieved in non degenerate (sum and difference frequency) interactions, with the advantage of significant phase-shifts even in the case of perfect phase- matching ( i.e. with high efficiency). Within this framework, objective of the proposed project is: -the investigation and demonstration of nonlinear phase-shifting through frequency non degenerate interactions in lithium niobate channel waveguides. Channel waveguides are to be realized by proton exchange and the material nonlinear response should be maximized via
quasi-phase-matching (QPM).
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Objectives:
- Design and thorough characterization of lithium niobate proton-exchanged channels. - Adoption of the electric-field poling technique to periodically reverse the crystal ferroelectric domains for QPM.
Benefit and expected impact:
The competences and team work available in Nice in the field of lithium niobate integrated optics and QPM should allow | the applicant to carry out the Project.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
