Duality and non-perturbative aspects of string theory

Objective

Research objectives and content
I Recent developments have shown that dualities in string theory and field theory are strongly interrelated. | The aim of this project is to understand how to implement the rules of semiclassical calculations using (Euclidean) p-branes, which describe the non-perturbative sector of string theory. I In the first part we will try to recover some results derived by other methods and in particular the Seiberg-Witten solution of N=2 gauge theory. Then we would like to apply these methods to some I novel, unresolved problems such as higher derivative terms and the
compactification of Seiberg-Witten theory to three dimension. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This project intends to get a deeper understanding on the rules of D-brane calculations thereby making contact to M(atrix) theory, which is a complete non-!iY-ry in eleven dimensions. I The profit from discussions with the Ecole Polytechnique will be an important input to the development of the project.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
