Objective
Research objectives and content
The proposed project is the set-up and commissioning of the production and test sites for the high precision ATLAS muon chambers in Greeee and, in particular, the construction and test of a pre-series MDT chamber (Module zero) at the Nuelear Physics Laboratory of the University of Thessaloniki. A temperature and humidity controlled laboratory will be set up at the University of Thessaloniki and the complete procedure for the assembly of chambers (typical size 1x2 m2) with meehanieal precision in the construction of the order of 20 microns will be established. The setup will serve for the serial production of 128 chambers in the years 1999 to 2003. A test facility will be set up in order to verify the mechanical accuracy of the chambers and their functionality. The chamber performance will be tested with cosmic ray muons.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Thessaloniki is one of the 12 production centres for ATLAS high precision muon chambers worldwide. The ATLAS muon project is being coordinated by CERN and Dr. Wotsehaek has played a major role in the eoneeption of the muon system. Thc proposed project will lead to the transfer of considerable knowhow on mnon chamber eonstruetion and testing from CERN tc the chamber production site. At the same time it will serve for educating undergraduate and graduate students in Experiment' Partiele Physies, in teehnieal aspects of precision meehanies and in modern techniques of eleetronies and data acquisition
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
The project will be carried out together with two industries of Northern Greeee: METKA for Metallie Construetions and ORPHANIDIS for precision tooling, which are interested in developing novel techniques on precision meehanies
