Objective
Research objectives and content The project is aimed at gaining an insight in the connection of sedimentary processes and anthropogenic influences in the special situation which is present in many estuaries and harbours. This is done by acquiring a sound database and by representing the data in a geographical information system (GIS). The comparison with another low-tidal-zone harbour will help to find the principal features of the system. Data acquisition will include a seismic survey as a decision basis, sediment sampling with short and long cores especially on transects from extremely disturbed harbour settings to deep and/or sheltered sites with only limited ship traffic. Sediments will be dated and analyzed in respect to sedimentological and geochemical properties. These parameters will then be interpreted using GIS in respect to changes in time and space. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) The project offers the possibility to learn more about techniques in marine and environmental geology, as well as to participate in an active, international research and academic environment. The study gives qualifications in sedimentological, environmental and applied geology. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) There will be contact with industry through the Port of Gvteborg AB. The results concerning the effects of dredging and water-jet propulsion ships on remobilization of contaminants will have importance for both the industrial potential and the overall environmental health of harbour waters and adjacent regions.
