The structure of aqueous electrolytes - experiment and theory

Objectif

Research objectives and content
Experimental studies will be carried out on representative 1:1 and 2:1 aqueous electrolytes using three experimental methods: Neutron diffraction with isotopic substitution (NDIS), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and anomalous X-ray scattering.
The primary objective will be to obtain information on the
ion-ion correlations and on ionic hydration as a function of concentration, dielectric constant and density. The results will be compared with predictions based on current theories of model electrolytes and computer simulations of ionic hydration. A quantitative comparison will be carried out of the relative accuracy of the various experimental techniques used. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The applicant will be trained in the techniques of NDIS, EXAFS and anomalous X-ray scattering at ILL (Grenoble, France), ESRF (Grenoble, France) and ISIS (RAL, UK). She will also learn the present status of the theory of aqueous electrolyte solutions. This programrne will provide an excellent grounding for future research in both experiment and theory. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) Aqueous electrolytes are important in many natural processes in biochemistry, geology and solution science. A better understanding of their fundamental properties will be of interest to developments in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
