Development of a1 and fe-based nanophase composites in order to improve mechanical and magnetic properties

Objective

Research objectives and content
The aim of this project will be to develop nanophase composites based on two system (Al-Ni-Sn and Fe-Nb-B)obtained by two different process (rapid solidification and mechanical alloying). for two important industrial application of nanoscale materials: mechanical and magnetic properties. The structure and the thermal stability of these alloys produced by melt-spinning and by ball-milling will be investigated by XRD,TEM,DSC and TGA. The technological objective will be to optimise and control the nanostructure to improve hardness and wear resistance (Al-based alloys), and to obtain the best soft magnetic properties (Fe-based alloys). The Fundamental objective will be to understand the behaviour of nanophase composites by a comparative approach to these two systems.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This project is a very good opportunity to investigate the ball-milling method, magnetic materials and magnetic measurements such as TMG and VSM. It will be well suited to improve my knowledge of the possibilities of nanophase composites for industrial applications, building on the experience recently gained in processing these materials.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
This project is concerned with the development of magnetic and mechanical nanophase composites for application in industry and particulary with Igenierisa Magnetica Aplicada S.L. in Spain and Oxford Instruments in England.
