Objective
Research objectives and content
The aim of this project is to prepare Quantized Magnetic Disk-type structures suitable for high density storage (> 100 Gbits/in2) by the artificial nanostructuring of magnetic thin films.with large magnetocrystalline anisotropy The first I structure-type will consist of an array of isolated hard magnetic dots prepared by lithography of SmCO5 thin films. The second structure-type will consist of hard magnetic dots in a non or soft magnetic matrix prepared by local mixing (ion and electron | l beams) of multilayer films of Al/Mn and Sm/Co respectively. Laser induced phase transformations of SmCo films will also be studied as model systems. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The candidate will be trained in the preparation of thin films by sputtering.and their patterning by standard lithographic techniques as well as alternative tecniques. The structures will then be fully characterised to assess their potential use as storage media. This training will ideally place the candidate for employment in European industries based on thin film technology.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Considering the economic importance of Europe, present levels of industrial activity in the area of magnetic recording media could be much higher. It is hoped that by developing an expertise in this subject within the scientific domain industrial activity I will be promoted, as has recently happened in the area of magnetic heads.
