Objective
Research objectives and content
The study of the physical properties of experimental these Kagome antiferromagnets is important to our understanding of fundamental magnetic order as they possess a new type of magnetic ground state, the spin liquid, resulting from the unique connectivity of the lattice. The jarosite series offers the best examples Kagome systems and so provides the best opportunity to investigate this new type of magnetic order. Detailed investigation will be done on the effect of spin quantum number (both integer and half-integer) and diamagnetic dilution on the low-temperature physical properties of these materials, and on the competition between different possible ground states. Characterisation of the magnetic properties of these materials requires a large number of complimentary, techniques (e.g. neutron diffraction, muon spin resonance, Mossbauer spectroscopy, specific heat and SQUID susceptibility).
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
This proposal is to study these materials using the wide range of techniques and expertise available within the framework of the materials science division of the CEA The CEA provides an excellent environment of experience and expertise in which not only to learn about the experimental techniques required to research the physics of new magnetic technologies, but to develop the broad knowledge of the topical problems in magnetic behaviour that is also necessary.
