La-icp-ms analysis of trace elements in biogenic minerals - time series recording of environmental changes

Objectif

Research objectives and content
The project will contribute to our understanding of trace element behaviour in biogenic minerals via LA-ICP-MS analysis. Study objectswill be bivalve
shells and fish otoliths. Focus will be on relative importance of physiological vs environmental control. The impact
of changes in such
environmental parameters as temperature, salinity, trace metal pollutants will be assessed by studying the variability of the most appropriate elemental tracers. Short and long-term environmental variations, will be assessed via the study of biogenic minerals with different growth rates. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
The applicant will acquire expertise in the use of a powerful analytical tool for the determination of trace elements through discrete point analysis directly on the specimen. This technology can be applied to a wide range of biological, geological, and other materials. The acquisition of such expertise by research units in the area of origin of the applicant complies with needs expressed by local collectivities and industries and is thus likely to open career opportunities.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Fishing, oyster, fish, and clam nurseries represent the basis of the economy along the Atlantic coast of southern France Accordingly, mixed CNRS-IFREMER research units, integrated in EC-programmes, are developing projects to improve qualitatively and quantitatively the resources. The acquired expertise will eventually be used locally, but cab be of interest anywhere else.
