Growth of size-determined metal nanoclusters on gold substrates and study of their redox and electocatalytic behaviour

Objective

Research objectives and content
(i) Growth of clusters of Silver, Copper, Platinum, Palladium of nanometer dimensions (typically < 5nm diameter) in preformed nanometer sized holes in Au(111) single crysal surface as substrate, and ascertain the correlation between deposition overpotential and cluster size. (ii) Investigate the electrochemical properties of the size-determined nanoclusters and compare with those of the bulk metal. The redox potential for oxidation of the nanoclusters will be determined as a function of their size. (iii) The electrocatalytic behaviour of these clusters will be investigated as model systems for active sites which are of vital importance in heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis. The use of nanoclusters as model systems for catalytic processes is of major industrial importance.
Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact)
Use of modern very high resolution surface techniques (not available in Cork) to produce and investigate minute features on surfaces and interfaces. Exposure to wide variety of ancilliary techniques and expertise.
Links with industry / industrial relevance (22)
Nanocluster behaviour is of major significance in areas such as catalyst / electrocatalyst development, microelectronics and microfabrication technology - these are areas of major and increasing importance.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
