Simulation of co2 and water vapour fluxes in a young sitka spruce (picea sitchensis (bong.) carr.) plantation

Objective

Research objectives and content Models of forest atmosphere interactions are needed both to forecast the future carbon balance of the atmosphere and forest development under a changing climate or/and forestry management. 3D models of canopy structure, radiative transfer and tree physiology are tools to describe the complex interaction between weather, tree structure and physiology. With this proposal we want to intensify the scientific l exchange between two groups working on the field of forest canopy modelling with the aim to find and validate specific strategies for plant canopy modelling In a 6 month project CO2 and water vapour fluxes in a young Sitka spruce plantation should be simulated by using two different 3D canopy models. Various field measurements were undertaken to gain parameters for the simulations. Own field measurements and results supplied by other projects of the host institution will be used for validation of the modelled output. Modelled intra canopy variability of absorbed photons, carbon assimilation and water loss will be used to quantify the impacts of aboveground competition between individual trees for light. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) I shall be trained in the parameterisation and the use of the 3D canopy model MAESTRA of the IERM. This includes special gas exchange measurements in the field at leaf scale, configuration of the model and the use of the model as an analysis tool. Results of the investigations in a young spruce forest will be a l necessary addition to generalise conclusions drawn from my current research in an old spruce forest in central Gerrnany. Links with industry / industrial relevance (22) At the state of the proposed investigation there are minor direct links to industry. However, the product, the 3D forest canopy model, is expected to become an important analysis tool for future forestry management.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
