Research objectives and content

sustainable management of water resources in European countries, both for water quantity and water quality, in response to climate change. The development of these techniques depends on improved understanding of the hydrological effects of climate change, and the relationship between hydrology and land use. The project draws upon the results of two long-running studies, the UK Institute of Hydrology's Plynlimon catchment experiment and the studies of the environmental problems of Lake Balaton carried out by the Water Resources Research Institute (Vituki) based in Budapest. Hydrometric records from catchments in mid-Wales and Hungary, representing the wet uplands of the western seaboard and the drought-prone continental region respectively, will be examined for trends and changes that can be attributed to climate, either to long-term change or to natural cyclic fluctuations, and the data will be used to establish relationships between climate and hydrology. Particular attention will be given to the prediction of surface water quality changes. The models linking climate and hydrology will be incorporated into a decision support modelling system, which will draw on experience with geographical information systems (GIS) and catchment models ranging from steady-state and seasonal models to intermediate-complexity event-based models. The project will undertake the identification of important issues of water and environmental management in relation to climate changes and the anthropogenic context, and a detailed examination of proposed control strategies will be carried out for the two pilot areas. Finally a closing workshop will consider the application of the techniques developed for this project to other areas of Europe, with particular attention being given to data needs and the occurrence of environmental problems and control strategies not encountered in the pilot catchments.
