CoLD NEUTRON FACILITY AT DR3 THERMAL NEUTRON FACILITY AT NFL

Objective

The Studsvik Neutron Research Laboratory (NFL) proposes to make some of its facilities for neutron scattering and neutron physics-available-to scientists in the EU through the Large Scale Facilities program. This proposal is made jointly with the Risoe National Laboratory in Denmark who already run such a program very successfully. There is at present a considerable over-demand for access to neutron scattering facilities by European scientists; this program will help to reduce that demand. The instrumentation offered at NFL will be complementary to that at Risoe. Initially NFL will include in the program the liquids and amorphous diffractometer SLAD (also suitable for very rapid medium resolution powder diffraction), the depolarisation analysis instrument POLAR1 and the on-line radioactive isotope separator OSIRIS. High resolution powder, single crystal and residual stress diffractometers are also available if there is a high level of demand for similar instruments at Risoe. It is planned to increase the beam time offered at NFL. over a 4 year period, from 20 to 30 to 40 beam weeks/year as construction of new instruments is completed. These will include a thermal time-of-flight spectrometer. Within the program at NFL we want to build a close collaboration with materials scientists. We will offer flexible arrangements suited to those synthesising new materials (e.g. rapid testing of materials prior to allocation of beam time) and develop special methods for studying processes in situ.
The program will be managed jointly with Risoe. with no significant changes to the arrangements already in existence. The mechanism for selection of experiments will remain the same.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
