The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL)

Objective



Principal characteristic of the facility and of the support offered to users:
The Svedberg Laboratory (TSL) is a Swedish national research facility providing equipment for accelerator-based research to scientists from universities and institutes in Sweden and from the international research community. The laboratory has two accelerators; a cyclotron and a storage and cooler ring. The accelerator complex can deliver beams of energies up to 1 360 MeV for protons and to 470 MeV per nucleon for light ions. A number of detector facilities have been or are being installed at the laboratory. The most important detector devices at the cooler ring are the multi-detector setups, WASA/PROMICE and CHICSi, which are designed for studies of production and decay of light mesons in light-ion collisions and for investigations of multifragmentation in intermediate energy heavy-ion reactions, respectively. At a cyclotron beam line a monoenergetic neutron beam facility is available. It gives neutron beams in the energy range 50 to 180 MeV and is used by several research groups from manv institutes for basic and applied research.
Together with KVI, Groningen and IKP/FZ, Julich, TSL will form the Light-Ion Facility Europe (LIFE) which will have a unique position in Europe and a strongly competetive position in the world.
Users under the proposed LSF contract will be given full access to the experimental facilities of the laboratory, e.g. beam time from any of the accelerators, computing facilities, data acquisition systems, electronics, technical assistance from the local staff, office space, help to arrange housing, etc.
Quantity of access being offered and number of users who may benefit: TSL is prepared to extend the beam time delivered to users by 72 24-hour days during a three-year period, i.e. a 15 % increase compared to the present situation, to make possible additional access for users from Europe.
It is anticipated that four new groups with typically seven to eight members, i.e. about 30 scientists per year can be accommodated. In total around 90 new users can be expected to benefit from the additional access being offered.
