IN SITU DETERMINATIONS of PROPERTIES OF HYDROUS SILICATE MELTS. APPLICATIONS to EARTH SCIENCES. TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS

Objectif

Volatiles (mainly water) are only dissolved in melts under pressure and an training of post-doctoral researchers in different experimental and understanding of magmatic processes in Earth Sciences requires the analytical modern techniques. All teams have international reputation in characterisation of hydrous melts both at high pressure and high temperature (in-situ).Up to now, both natural or synthetic silicate melts their research field: high pressure and high temperature experimentation and technology (CRSCM Orleans, IMH Hannover), infrared and Raman have been studied under room conditions. Since the structure of glasses are different from that of melts, it becomes necessary to develop in situ spectroscopy (BGS Bay-euth, CRSCM, IMH), NMR spectroscopy (CRPHT Orleans, investigations of melt properties The project involves (1) in-situ UW Warwick), XAFS (PMG Marne la Vallee physical properties of melts (BGR spectroscopic investigations (infrared, Raman, nuclear magnetic resonance, Bayreuth, IPGP Paris).
x-ray absorption fine structure) of hydrous glasses and melts, (2) in-situ This ensures a high quality pluri-disciplinar formation of young determination of physical properties of hydrous melts (viscosity, density), and (3) measurement of thermodynamic properties of melts. The realisation scientists, who are expected to work at least in two places during their fellowship. The training of graduate students in the involved teams and of the project requires the development and improvement of both spectroscopic and high- pressure and high-temperature techniques. Besides the existing cooperations with other southern european countries allows qualified post-doctoral researchers from most european countries to be the fundamental application to Earth Sciences, the investigations of melt. involved in the network.
properties and the development of high-temperature and high-pressure techniques (cells) coupled with high resolution spectroscopic techniques are expected to produce technological fall-outs applicable to material, chemical and agrobiological industries.
