MAGNET started its activities based on the need to develop a net of centres for the diffusion of multimedia through the European Union, to carry out distribution and awareness-raising of this business area.
MAGNET is a Working Group that joins Multimedia Special Interest Groups from 12 European Countries - Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, United Kingdom - under the European ESPRIT programme, active in the converging sectors of telecommunications, audio-visual and computing, be it in product developments or service provision.
During the period 1996-1998, MAGNET has been a collaboration which currently consists of thirteen national Multimedia Special Interest Groups (MMSIGs). The business of multimedia demands that suppliers take a global view, addressing markets that transcend national boundaries. The MAGNET Working Group helped to create a single and global market for its members by encouraging and assisting their active participation in business at an international level. MAGNET activities had a multiplier effect on the action of the thirteen participating members. The published results include a summary document which provides a snapshot of the thirteen countries together with key findings for the four study areas.
