System for high-speed for automatic reading of cheques

Objective

The project aims to complete the design, implementation, integration and testing of a new system to read bank cheques automatically.

Work will focus in particular on the reading of British cheques. The operation of the system will be demonstrated at a pilot site, the British outsourcing company, Unisys Payment System. The automatic reading system developed by MATRA CAP Systèmes aims at saving time in the entry of cheque data traditionally done manually.

The automatic reading system will be able to extract automatically the relevant data whatever the issuing bank and the implied format and background diversity. Its effectiveness in achieving this task will rely on the simultaneous reading of both the courtesy (digits) and legal (letters) amounts. Several techniques will be used simultaneously to reach high levels of performance. Most of these will make use of learning methods for which tens of thousands of samples must to be collected to ensure a representative learning database and a sound basis for comparative identification. The use of both digits and letters will provide the system with a high level of reliability. The objective is to make overall operational gains allowing a decrease by more than 50% of manual data-entry effort. The system will be highly parallel and will adapt to user demands, processing upwards of 50,000 cheques an hour.

The developments of the project target the French, UK and US markets. A consortium of five companies and academic institutions will together tackle the challenges it presents.
