Home networking and communications technologies

Objective

Over the years there has been a convergence of the IT and Telecom technologies. This has given rise to a new breed of Multifunction Products (MFP's). Now we are witnessing a new convergence, Telecoms and Cable. This has been brought about by the publics general acceptance of new communications technologies. This acceptance has led to an increased number of home owners purchasing fax machines, PC's etc. One of the biggest influences in this development has been the accessibility of the Internet which has gripped the publics imagination and is not likely to let go.
On top of this convergence there is an increased interest in interconnection of domestic appliances from VCR's, Set-top boxes to faxes and heating. New standards are evolving for the interconnection of appliances including the European Homes Systems (EHS) Standard.
The objective of the project is to allow the bridging between telecommunication, cable, personal computer connection, and EHS home automation/signal distribution by providing HOMENET, a 'routing' appliance that will act as the heart of a true network of appliances and signals in the home and connect to the information highways.
Building on the experience and know-how gained in the ESPRIT DAPPS Project for a Multifunction Device, the partners will provide features so that HOMENET will act as a Router for signals and appliance control.

Because of time-to-market requirements, the project has a duration of 18 months. The consortium comprises hardware and software technology suppliers, Ferrotec for the hardware platform and software for MFP and telecommunications functions, Visual Tools for video, home automation and HCI functions, and Trialog for the home automation network technology, and one of Europe's largest Cable TV operator, Cablelink Ltd for expertise in Cable TV. The fact that Cablelink itself is owned by a Telecommunications operator (Telecom Eireann) is an additional motivation for integrated technologies to take place. Each partner has existing business links for exploitation of this type of technology:
- Ferrotec work with a number of key European (and US) Telecoms and Cable companies (OEMs)
- Cablelink are well respected in the world of Cable TV market and advise many other cable companies.
- Visual Tools will operate on a licensing basis and with its contacts in TV & security companies.
- Trialog previous experience with EHS helped it establish links with key companies (such as EDF) in the Home Automation field.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
