Algorithms for radio network optimisation

CORDIS provides links to public deliverables and publications of HORIZON projects.

Links to deliverables and publications from FP7 projects, as well as links to some specific result types such as dataset and software, are dynamically retrieved from OpenAIRE .

Exploitable results

Exploitable results from the project consist of SW tools incorporating optimisation algorithms. For existing networks, a global optimisation procedure allows network expansions (additional sites or additional services) and for new networks it immediately ensures optimised networks to be designed. Characteristics of the GSM standard are used as reference for the network design, but the optimisation algorithms can easily be adjusted to manage network design on other TDMA or 3G systems. ARNO proves that the automatic radio network design is tractable. Algorithms from ARNO are able to generate several solutions (networks) in hours, with different levels of cost and quality. By proposing appropriate models and optimisation algorithms, the tools dramatically reduce design deadlines and costs. These gains will be highly profitable for the deployment of 3G systems all over the world. The present average cost for setting up sites in European cities is about 150 000 EURO per site. Optimisation of the overall radio engineering process has led to a better dimensioning and positioning of transmitters (increasing traffic handling capacity while reducing their number) and to a better management of spectrum resources (the minimisation of interference is a major objective of the process). By proposing appropriate optimisation algorithms, ARNO not only lowers the costs associated with the design time of mobile radio networks, but also reduces the costs associated with the number of sites while providing appropriate capacity. The revenue pay back is assessed in millions of EURO. Project URL: http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/User/Steve.Hurley/ARNO/
