PRESENCE is a research program that asks how design can exploit information and communication technologies to meet new needs. This multi-party research project develops scenarios for a communication infrastructure that will enhance the capacity of (in particular, older) members of a local community to remain active and mutually supporting within that community. As such, PRESENCE represents a significant shift in emphasis away from a technology-based approach to design to one based on prior analysis of social needs. The thinking behind the project is that for older people, technology is a means to better communications - not an end-in-itself. Significantly, better communications are often more important than high-tech physical aids in reducing the dependency on welfare services. The biggest challenge in developing these innovative concepts is to make sure that they meet the needs of users, while at the same time not being limited to what the users themselves can come up with. Asking people to think of innovative devices they might want to use in the future requires great imagination from them, and asking for their views on a proposed product is just as difficult - how can they give an opinion on something that is not even visible? Or, as one of the partners puts it: "Design is the bias that helps things evolve. That is why design is one of the engines of civilisation. You have to use good feeling and intuition to go beyond user opinions and move them forward." In addition to product and service innovation, an important outcome of PRESENCE is the development and communication of new methodologies for the design of information technology products and services for older people - and other social players with different needs - in everyday life.
