Information technology for food production

Objective

SMEs within the food production industry have traditionally been 'low-tech' operations and therefore often operate under non-optimum conditions. Taking advantage of advanced IT is essential to retain the competitiveness of European companies against foreign rivals. Efficient use of advanced IT solutions would allow SMEs to increase productivity, return and ensure environmentally safe operation as well as optimising the use of natural resources.
The principal objective of IT-FOR-FOOD is to implement advanced IT which will permit European SME food production companies to improve the productivity of their operations in parallel with fulfilling the demands of the EU regarding own checks and environmental issues.

The systems will specifically use IT to include measures for resource, waste and energy management, thus enhancing the industry's capabilities for environmentally friendly production. The project includes specific training measures within the producing SMEs concerning management and IT, related to optimising production methodologies. The project will elevate traditional production facilities to flexible concurrent production environments, and exploit IT-based business integration both within the production companies as well as on an inter-company level, up to the level of distantly located SMEs operating together as a single company. The project will lead to innovative use of state-of-the-art technology by assessing how companies within the food production industry can use IT better, as well as implementing IT solutions on a trial basis.
