Objective
THE PRESENT STUDY FOCUSES ON THE WAY TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN GENERAL, AND NEW TELECOMMUNICATION TECHNIQUES IN PARTICULAR, AFFECT THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF PRODUCER SERVICES IN THE NETHERLANDS. BASED ON DESK RESEARCH AND A NUMBER OF INTERVIEWS WITH KEY PERSONS IN INDUSTRY, NOTABLY IN THE TRANSPORTATION SECTOR, AN ASSESSMENT HAS BEEN MADE OF THE REGIONAL IMPACT ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND LOCATION OF PRODUCER SERVICES.
FROM THE ANALYSIS IT SEEMS THAT THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW TELECOMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES WILL AFFECT THE DEVELOPMENT AND LOCATION OF PRODUCER SERVICES MOST WHEN COMBINED WITH AUTOMATION IN THE FIELD OF MANUFACTURING AND LOGISTICS. EACH OF THESE DEVELOPMENTS WILL TAKE PLACE TO A DIFFERENT EXTENT AND VARYING PACE DEPENDING STRONGLY ON ECONOMIC OPPORUNITIES. THSES DEVELOPMENTS BOTH CREATE NEWAND SHED EXISTING EMPLOYMENT, WHILE THE REGIONAL IMPACT WILL VARY AS A RESULT OF EXISTING ECONOMIC STRUCTURES AND CIRCUMSTANCES. THEREFORE IT IS HARDLY POSSIBLE AT THIS STAGE TO GIVE A GENERAL EVALUATION REGARDING GROWTH AND DECLINE OF REGIONAL EMPLOYMENT IN PRODUCER SERVICES. IT IS CLEAR THOUGH THAT THESE DEVELOPMENTSWILL BRING ABOUT CONSIDERABLE CHANGES IN THE SPATIAL ORGANISATION OF THE PRODUCTION PROCESS, BOTH ON THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SCALE. MOST PROBABLY THESE CHANGES WILL INDUCE A REGIONAL DECONCENTRATION, EACH CONCERN-DIVISION TRYING TO MAKE PROFIT OF COMPARATIVE REGIONAL ADVANTAGES. IN CONTRAST TO THIS TREND NEW EMERGING SERVICES WILL LOCATE IN THE MOST ECONOMICALLY DEVELOPED REGIONS AS THESE HAVE BETTER ACCESS TO INFORMATION, HAVE A RESERVOIR OF HIGHLY SKILLED LABOUR FORCE AND OFFER ATTRACTIVE SERVICE PROVISIONS AND LIVING ENVIRONMENTS.
