Objective
Industry strives to improve performance and profitability while improving satety. Gains in safety & economic performance require an overall safety framework. The recently published IEC 61508 provides an international safety framework. The project will deliver a set of Guiding Principles (GP) to enable the EU process & allied industries to rapidly adopt uniform implementations of IEC 61508. Without the GP industry will operate in a fragmented way. This may handicap them in meeting regulatory obligations. It will hinder take-up of 61508, disadvantage them in exploiting its potential, hindering market penetration, impacting on profitability, asset effectiveness & safety. The GP will enable the EU to design/operate safe industrial facilities through access to information on 61508 implementations. It will have a structured framework to cater for ease of maintenance and update. The primary source of raw material will be via workshops. The GP will include case studies, templates, best practice guides, procedures and techniques.
