Efficient design and control of agglomeration in spray drying machines

Objective

Spray drying is an essential unit operation for the manufacture of many European products with specific powder properties. Presently specific requirement of users can be addressed by trial and error only. The knowledge and technologies will be generated to develop a new generation of machinery fulfilling increasingly stringent requirements.

The knowledge on spray drying in 'ideal' systems will be extended into 'real' systems. An industrial validated Design Tool (predictive model) will be developed and implemented in a prototype predictive control system for new generation multi-product systems for monitoring control and optimisation of agglomeration. Databases on spray conditions of industrially used nozzle configurations and on the relation between the degree of agglomeration and product functionalities will be improved.
