Smart structural diagnostics using piezo-generated elastic waves

Objective

It is proposed to develop a system based on piezo-electric diagnostic technology for the remote semi-continuous monitoring of hot-spots in structures such as oil or gas pipelines, storage tanks, double-hull ships or other industrial installations. Experiments with proof-of-concept specimens indicates that the proposed approach has the potential to detect, locate, identify and size various types of defects. This is done by analysing anomalies in elastic wave pattern received by an array of smart piezo-electric sensors permanently mounted on a monitored structure. Specially designed piezo-generators cause long distance wave propagation. The sensors signals will be transmitted via tele-communication networks to a control unit, will be processed to identify any damage and an assessment of defects' critically will be made. the system will thereby provide the capability for real -time remote maintenance decision-making.
