Fibre optic sensors for the monitoring of composites strengthened structures

Objective

Up to date, the conventional reinforcing technology of construction structures consists on the adhesive joining of steel plates to the concrete surface. Such method, presents several disadvantages: steel plates are heavy and difficult for handling on site, corrosion of the steel occurs at the steel concrete interface, etc. In this contest, the purpose of this project is to develop a structure reinforcing technology based on composite laminates with embedded optic fibre sensors. Composites have several advantages: Low weight, easy handling, high corrosion resistance, etc. At last, composites offer the possibility of embedding optic fibre sensors into its matrix. ln this way, once the structure is strengthened, it is possible to control in real time the stress state at any point of the material. Benefits:
(1) Optimisation of structure design (reducing construction costs)
(2) Real time monitoring and reporting (savings in maintenance costs)
(3) Smart structure (improving safety and reliability)

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
