Security in automotive glass encoding

Objective

Security marking of automotive glass windows is an essential deterrent to theft. However, current methods of marking glass with security codes depends on the use of chemical agents which are slow acting (and hence costly in terms of labour time) and which pose environmental problems in the disposal of the chemical by-products produced. In addition, polyvinyl chloride polymer stencils need tube cut for each mark, increasing labour lime, with fun her problems in disposing of the stencil material after use since environmental regulation profits incineration. Lasers have been shown to be capable of marking glass by a wholly physical means involving no chemical interaction and hence no harmful by-products. Very recently developed short pulse length diode pumped solid state (DPSS) Nd: YAG lasers have been shown to be able to make marks in the interior of a relatively thick section of glass by virtue of increased focusabilty allowing the laser energy to produce micro cracking that results in a visible feature. The main deliverable to be produced from this project is a tested demonstration system for laser marking of glass by this means.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
