Objective
Trivalent salts of chromium are the tanning agents used mainly in European leather production. The trivalent state is considered to be non-toxic but a high degree of toxicity is attributed to chromium (VI). The possible presence of chromium (VI) in leather constitutes a problem of paramount importance for the European tanning industry from both the social and environmental viewpoints. In given situations traces of chromium (VI) are detected. The problem is complex because it is possible to detect chromium (VI) in manufactured leather, which has not been deliberately treated with compounds of this oxidation state. The aim of the project is to establish the most suitable conditions that allow the production of skins/hides that are free of chromium (VI), even during their useful life in contact with environmental agents such as heat and light. It is believed that this objective may be achieved improving the tanning processes by introducing protective measures, which prevent the oxidation of chromium to its hexavalent state.
