Selective carbon dioxide removal from anaesthetic gases by membrane absorption technology.

Objective

Carbon dioxide absorbers used in medical anaesthesia breathing circuits use disposable chemical absorbers. These absorbers need to be changed every day or two and involves the transport, storage, handling and disposal of potentially hazardous materials. The absorbent materials can also interact with anaesthetic agents to produce harmful by-products. The intention of the current development is to replace the chemical absorbent with a regenerable unit that does not require the handling of chemicals by the user, which is selective for carbon dioxide removal and avoids interactions with any material in the breathing circuit. The membrane technology already developed by TNO will be modified to achieve these alms and this technology can, with the unique market position of Molecular Products and the medical device manufacturing experience of Kleeven Medical, be brought successfully to market.
