Objective
A long-standing problem in freeze-drying is the inability to monitor the process quantitatively and reproducibly, and in the determination of the end-point of drying for any given product. Processing conditions have historically been arrived at on an arbitrary basis due to a widespread lack of understanding in the user industries (including pharmaceutical, biotech, vaccines, diagnostics, foods) about the process itself. The partners propose the development of an intelligent process monitoring and control system based on the use of laser-, thermal imaging- and infrared-technologies to provide sensor devices that can be integrated into freeze-drying apparatus. This will enable the process to be more precisely monitored, and controlled on-line on the basis of the information gained. Success of the proposed RTD project will result in significant economic and environmental benefits throughout the EU.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
