Innovative technology based on computerised system for automatic classification of slabs and tiles of marble and granite in the ornamental stone industry

Objective

The ITC will develop a prototype system for the automatic classification/selection of the ornamental stones products increasing the production efficiency. The quality selection and classification of end-products (tiles and slabs) are still performed subjectively by expert workers who on the basis of experience are selecting every tile or slab produced in the plant classifying the choice to be stocked or rejected. Unlike the technical quality characteristics: strength hardness absorption which are objectively assessed by laboratory tests, no technical/scientific tools are actually used for the aesthetic quality evaluation. This organisation has 2 main drawbacks: oblige the workers to handle hundreds of kg of tiles manually excluding any automatic selection system increasing the production costs. The winning policy for further developing the stone industry is the qualification of finished products in order to consolidate the actual leadership of Europe in the international market.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)
