An innovative approach to improving the performance of the hydraulic ram pump for rural water supply

Objective

The hydraulic ram pump, a type of water pump that requires no external energy supply, has been in use around the world for over200 years, providing water in rural communities. This proposal outlines novel, and innovation research that will result in a major step change in ram pump performance and in its applicability within and throughout the EU. The engineering research will take an inventive approach to the ram pump, making use of modern theories on fluid flow, and will also consider the appropriateness of novel materials in combination with improved valve performance. The proposed research has considerable technical risk, but promises considerable benefits. These include: improved water output; reduced shipping costs; and applicability over a wider range of sites than is currently possible and will result in a "one-size-fits-all’ pump.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
