Development of a new technology for backfilling decorated films with thermoplastics

Objective

The objective of this project is the development of a new process for a one-step backfilling technology for plastic parts. In this project the performing and punching of the film shall be realized inside the tool. This shall help to reduce the investment costs and to enhance the applicability for SMEs. Normally, a decorated film is preformed, punched out, inserted into the tool and backfilled.

The advantages of backmoulding films are one-step production and decoration during injection molding and avoiding the emission of harmful substances as compared to other processes. Disadvantageous is the complex harmonizing of the single processing steps until the moulding, which can lead to higher scrap rates or up to the non- applicability of this technology. The further developing of this technology shall eliminate these errors and save tooling costs. First attempts to form the film inside the tool were successful. Areas of application: see enclosure.
