Electronics recycling: a global project for recycling metals, plastics and glass

Objective

The rapid growth of wasted electrical and electronic equipment is of concern. As stated in the Exploratory Memorandum of the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on waste electrical and electronic equipment, in 1998, 6 million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment were generated and it's volume is expected to increase by at least 3-5% per annum. This means that in 5 years 16-28% more of waste electrical and electronic equipment will be generated and in 12 years the amount will have doubled. Our project is aiming to give a possible solution to the re-using and recycling of the waste electronic equipment and also to give a contribution in solving the lack of a harmonised European legislation in this field. The objective of this project is the development of an environmentally-compatible integrated process for the disposal of the end-life electronic equipment and the wastes of the electronic industry and the following recovery of the metallic materials, plastics and glass.
