Auxiliary climbing robot for underwear ship hull cleaning of the sea adherence and surveying (AURORA)

Objective

The proposal is responding to the major society concern of environmental impact of nowadays operations for dry dock ship hull cleaning of sea adherence, which are very contaminant. EU shipyards present and important activity dealing with repairing/maintenance, and cleaning of sea adherence is mandatory before other activities can proceed. Environmental regulations are causing repairing activity to migrate to third countries with less strict regulations, decreasing EU yards activity and seriously compromising employment. Only innovative EU approaches can provide an eco-efficient solution to this problem. Cleaning tasks will be done underwater without the need of taking the ship to the dry dock by means of a low cost auxiliary climbing robot for underwater ship hull cleaning of sea adherence. Surveying of ship hull steel will be done also underwater using specialised sensors. A pre-industrial system will be realised and evaluated in shipyards.
