Augmented reality for remotely operated vehicles based on 3d acoustical and optical sensors for underwater inspection and survey

Objective

The societal needs that this proposal responds to are related to the following problems: The unmanned underwater technology has to be improved in order to carry out unmanned surveys in shallow and deep water, especially in turbid water. The locate and classify potentially hazards in dams, tunnels, dikes, harbours etc. No reliable system exists for detection, localization and classification of oil or gas leakages from pipelines or ship wrecks. Underwater positioning needs to be improved in order to carry out complex construction tasks in deep water in a reliable and efficient manner. Unmanned underwater intervention and surveys are complicated and often inefficient due to lack easy to interpret sensor data. There is a need for intelligent sensor and control systems that can assist and guide the operators.
