Nanostructured sulphur traps for the protection of high performance nox storage/reduction catalysts in low emission engine applications

Objective

The objective of the project is developing new innovative nanostructured materials to realize disposable or ex-site regenerable monolithic sulphur traps (NanoSTRAPS) which protect NOxSR catalysts from sulphur poisoning using ultra low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuel or "category 3" gasoline (C3G). Specific targets are to
(i) develop monolithic sulphur traps which eliminate SOx (removal > 90%) for over 20,000 km vehicle operation on the roller test bench (using ULSD or C3G fuels);
(ii) demonstrate their applicability in combination with state-of-the-art NOxSR catalysts to achieve the lowest possible NOx emission (meet Euro IV or lower standards);
(iii) evaluate their impact in terms of fuel economy and management of the exhaust gas after treatment system components; and
(iv) optimise the composition of the sulphur trap in relation to the type of fuel. NanoSTRAPS are based on novel nanostructured and layered-type materials promoted by metals.
